An encounter with environment that’s focused on sound and listening. Participants will need to be at the Salt House in West Bay, Dorset for 10am. After an introductory session we will undertake a circular walk from West Bay to Bridport and back. Specialist field recording equipment will be provided and you’ll be asked to seek out ‘lost’ and ‘hidden’ sounds – from inside objects, underwater sounds and electromagnetic sounds. Following an afternoon workshop session, which will focus on sound preparation, you will use your recordings to help realise the Lost and Found Symphony, a soundscape composition to be produced during a live, improvised performance at 6.pm at the Salt House :: more

“Sometimes we walk on the ground, sometimes on sidewalks or asphalt, or other surfaces. Can we find ground to walk on and can we listen for the sound or sounds of ground? Are we losing ground? Can we find new ground by listening for it?”
Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016)

In addition to this year’s theme, WLD 2017 reflects and honors the life and legacy of Pauline Oliveros, who died at age 84 on 26 November 2016.

Dozens of organizations and thousands of people from six continents have participated in World Listening Day since its inception in 2010.

Sound + Environment 2017 is a four day conference bringing together artists and scientists to explore the ways that sound can deepen our understanding of environments. For example, recent developments in the field of ecoacoustics are proving fruitful in assessing ecosystem change. Sound is also increasingly used to monitor built structures and to inform urban design. We can use sound for scientific and artistic exploration, to inform and expand our knowledge of environments and our relationships to the world around us :: more

Whitstable Biennale – Satellite – 2016 on the Beach in front of Keems Yard
Saturday 4 June 11am till 5pm

A satellite regular since 2010 (coast to coast :: sounding shore) Marcus Leadley will once again be collaborating with David Rogers and Mandy Rathbone, installing his headphone listening system on the beach in front of Keems Yard. While the coastal themes of previous years are retained, this year sees a focus on ‘live performance’ rather than recorded sound. As well as performing Marcus, David and Mandy will be curating a programme of live ‘silent’ sound-art where the practitioners have been asked to respond to the local environment in diverse, entertaining and thought provoking ways.

Expect underwater sounds, home made instruments, the music of broken things, hidden sounds, elemental interactions and grand gestures… :: more
