A HARD DAY’S NIGHT PAYS OFF FOR PORTLAND’S EASTON YOUTH CLUB

‘Night and Day’ film nominated for Film Nation Shorts Awards

Young people who attend The Drop In Youth Club are delighted to learn that their film, Night and Day, has been nominated in the Best Documentary/Experimental 17-19 category at the final Film Nation Shorts Awards!

The film, Night and Day, offers teenagers’ views on their life on Portland, Dorset and was created following the coverage of the so called “Portland Riots” with suggestions for improved relations, or a truce, within the community. It is an invitation to look beyond ‘the first glance’ of preconceptions, assumptions and hype to discover them as individuals – expressive and willing to improvise … as are most people on Portland.

The film was made as part of a PVA MediaLab/LabCulture project, with local artists ivon oates and Joe Stevens. Ivon said; “It is absolutely fantastic that the film got so many votes.”

Youth worker at the The Drop In, Kate Chandler said; “For the young people this was a fantastic opportunity to get their voices heard, to work with local artists and to take part in a fun and exciting few days but to hear they have been nominated for an film award is just amazing! They are a fantastic group of young people and this is such an exciting opportunity for them!”

Katie Knowles, one of the young people involved in the film said: “I think the film being nominated is a great thing as it gives us a voice in our community”

Mandy Rathbone, Studio Manager at PVA MediaLab said; “It was a challenge to find a way of exploring the issues facing young people on Portland without presenting the different groups in their usual stereotyped ways. I’m delighted that this original and inventive film will be reaching a national audience.  A huge well done to all involved.”

The award ceremony will be held at the prestigious home of the London Film Festival, the British Film Institute on London’s Southbank. Winning films will then be shown at Olympic venues when the Games commence in July.

Photo Opportunity available with the young people on Thursday nights 7-9pm at The Drop In Youth Club in Easton.
